MEDITATION STEPS FOR BIGINERS

Meditation is the art of focusing 100% of your attention in one area. The practice comes with a myriad of well-publicized health benefits including increased concentration, decreased anxiety, and a general feeling of happiness.

Although a great number of people try meditation at some point in their lives, a small percentage actually stick with it for the long-term. This is unfortunate, and a possible reason is that many beginners do not begin with a mindset needed to make the practice sustainable.

The purpose of this article is to provide 20 practical recommendations to help beginners get past the initial hurdles and integrate meditation over the long term:

  •  Make it a formal practice. You will only get to the next level in meditation by setting aside specific time (preferably two times a day) to be still.
  • Start with the breath. Breathing deep slows the heart rate, relaxes the muscles, focuses the mind and is an ideal way to begin practice.
  • Stretch first. Stretching loosens the muscles and tendons allowing you to sit (or lie) more comfortably. Additionally, stretching starts the process of “going inward” and brings added attention to the body.
  • Meditate with Purpose. Beginners must understand that meditation is an ACTIVE process. The art of focusing your attention to a single point is hard work, and you have to be purposefully engaged!
  •  Notice frustration creep up on you. This is very common for beginners as we think “hey, what am I doing here” or “why can’t I just quiet my damn mind already”. When this happens, really focus in on your breath and let the frustrated feelings go.
  • Experiment. Although many of us think of effective meditation as a Yogi sitting cross-legged beneath a Bonzi tree, beginners should be more experimental and try different types of meditation. Try sitting, lying, eyes open, eyes closed, etc.
  • Feel your body parts. A great practice for beginning meditators is to take notice of the body when a meditative state starts to take hold. Once the mind quiets, put all your attention to the feet and then slowly move your way up the body (include your internal organs). This is very healthy and an indicator that you are on the right path.
  • Pick a specific room in your home to meditate. Make sure it is not the same room where you do work, exercise, or sleep. Place candles and other spiritual paraphernalia in the room to help you feel at ease.
  • Read a book (or two) on meditation. Preferably an instructional guide AND one that describes the benefits of deep meditative states. This will get you motivated. John Kabat-Zinn’s Wherever You Go, There You Are is terrific for beginners.
  • Commit for the long haul. Meditation is a life-long practice, and you will benefit most by NOT examining the results of your daily practice. Just do the best you can every day, and then let it go!
  • Generate moments of awareness during the day. Finding your breath and “being present” while not in formal practice is a wonderful way to evolve your meditation habits.
  •  Make sure you will not be disturbed. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is not insuring peaceful practice conditions. If you have it in the back of your mind that the phone might ring, your kids might wake, or your coffee pot might whistle than you will not be able to attain a state of deep relaxation.
  • Notice small adjustments. For beginning meditators, the slightest physical movements can transform a meditative practice from one of frustration to one of renewal. These adjustments may be barely noticeable to an observer, but they can mean everything for your practice.
  • Use a candle. Meditating with eyes closed can be challenging for a beginner. Lighting a candle and using it as your point of focus allows you to strengthen your attention with a visual cue. This can be very powerful.
  • Do NOT Stress. This may be the most important tip for beginners, and the hardest to implement. No matter what happens during your meditation practice, do not stress about it. This includes being nervous before meditating and angry afterwards. Meditation is what it is, and just do the best you can at the time.
  • Do it together. Meditating with a partner or loved one can have many wonderful benefits, and can improve your practice. However, it is necessary to make sure that you set agreed-upon ground rules before you begin!
  • Meditate early in the morning. Without a doubt, early morning is an ideal
time to practice: it is quieter, your mind is not filled with the usual clutter, and there is less chance you will be disturbed. Make it a habit to get up half an hour earlier to meditate.
  • Be Grateful at the end. Once your practice is through, spend 2-3 minutes feeling appreciative of the opportunity to practice and your mind’s ability to focus.
  • Notice when your interest in meditation begins to wane. Meditation is
hard work, and you will inevitably come to a point where it seemingly does not fit into the picture anymore. THIS is when you need your practice the most and I recommend you go back to the book(s) or the CD’s you listened to and become re-invigorated with the practice. Chances are that losing the ability to focus on meditation is parallel with your inability to focus in other areas of your life!

Meditation is an absolutely wonderful practice, but can be very difficult in the beginning. Use the tips described in this article to get your practice to the next level!

The Psychology Behind Self Harm Revealed

The Psychology Behind Self Harm Revealed

Also known as pain offset relief, the psychological mechanism associated with relief after removal of pain has been now studied by the Association for Psychological Science.
It showed that healthy individuals and individuals with a history of self-harm display similar levels of relief when pain is removed, which suggests that pain offset relief may be a natural mechanism that helps us to regulate our emotions.

Research showed that feeling pain leads to negative emotions, but less is known about the relief that occurs when pain is removed. Is pain offset associated with positive emotions, or simply the alleviation of negative emotions?

Joseph Franklin and colleagues used recording electrodes to measure participants' negative emotions (eyeblink startle response) and positive emotions (muscle activity behind the ear) in response to loud noises; sometimes the loud noise was presented alone and other times it was presented 3.5, 6, or 14 seconds after receiving a low- or high-intensity shock.

Participants showed increased positive emotions and decreased negative emotions after pain offset. The greatest increases in positive emotion tended to occur soon after high-intensity shocks, whereas the greatest decreases in negative emotions tended to occur soon after low-intensity shocks.

These findings shed light on the emotional nature of pain offset relief, and could provide insight into why some people seek relief through self-injurious behavior.

In this study, the researchers examined whether the emotional relief that comes with physical pain removal might be a potential mechanism that could help to explain why some people engage in self-harm behaviors.

Participants with or without a history of self-harm were assessed for emotion dysregulation and reactivity, self-injurious behavior, and for psychiatric disorders.

Using a similar recording electrode procedure as in the first study, Franklin and colleagues were able to measure positive and negative emotions in response to loud noises, either alone or after receiving a painful shock.

Surprisingly, healthy individuals displayed pain offset relief levels that were comparable to those of individuals with a history of self-harm, and there was no correlation between pain offset relief and self-harm frequency.

These results do not support the hypothesis that heightened pain offset relief is a risk factor for future self-injury.

Instead, Franklin and colleagues speculate that the biggest risk factors for nonsuicidal self-injury may concern how some people overcome the instinctive barriers that keep most people from inflicting self-harm.

The study appeared in Clinical Psychological Science.

FACE BEAUTY TIPS

FACE BEAUTY TIPS

Here are a few of those beauty tips that everyone should keep locked away in the back of their mind! Use these little tips to help improve your routine and your skin

Removing Makeup:

Sleeping with makeup isn’t ideal for any woman and really it’s not like we plan to either! Things just happen in our lives and sometimes falling asleep with a face full of makeup is one of them. Sleeping with makeup on is not the worst thing you can do to your face, but it is not the best. Keeping makeup on your face all of the time leads to blocked pores and oily, greasy skin. If you can’t give yourself the complete face wash it needs at night then just take a warm wash cloth and wipe your face to remove as much of the makeup as possible. Try not to make a habit out of going to bed with a your makeup on, but a few times won’t hurt.

Exfoliate:

Exfoliating your lips before application removes dead skin cells which allows for a fuller, brighter looking lips. Read our post on how to buff your lips to get extra voluptuous lips!

Puffy Eyes:

Fun night or rough night – whatever it may be eyes that are puffy are not a good look. Puffy eyes are a result of fluid build up that can be taken care of easily with a frozen bag of vegetables, cold tea bags or cold cut cucumbers.

Sunscreen:

Sunscreen should be worn all of the time. It doesn’t matter if you are running out to your car or going to the beach, any kind of UV rays are your skins worst enemy. Using sunscreen daily helps to keep your skin soft and protect it from the harsh UV rays. A good way to keep your face protected is by using a daily moisturizer with an added SPF.

BEAUTY PAGENT HAIR AND MAKEUP TIPS

BEAUTY PAGNENT HAIR AND MAKEUP TIPS

 Hair
Hair is extremely important to the overall pageant look. Although short hair is OK, long hair is really more appropriate and desirable for a beauty pageant. If you are going to wear your hair straight, it's essential that it's not frizzy. Apply a leave-in conditioner while the hair is still damp, before any styling. To straighten the hair, use a round brush and a blow dryer first. Afterward, run a flat iron through the hair. A shine serum is a must.

Concealer

Concealer can create truly magical results. Even if you don't wear a lot of makeup, concealer will help cover any scars, blemishes or under-eye circles that you may have. It's important that any concealer you choose is within one or two shades of your skin tone. When in doubt, choose the lighter color. Getting professionally matched at a cosmetics counter is the best way to find the most suitable concealer.

Foundation

Women who compete in beauty pageants wear foundation makeup. It tends to be heavy as stage makeup often is. The foundation controls oils and smooths and evens out skin tones. This is another product that can be difficult to match by yourself. If you choose the wrong color, it will look awful onstage. Visit a cosmetics counter to find the correct one. Use makeup sponges to dab it on your face and smooth all over.

BEAUTY TPIS FOR LIPS

Your Lip Shape Personality

SHAPE YOUR LIP PERSONALY

Ever wonder what your lips would say if they could talk? (Well, OK. You know what I mean.) I'm talking about your lip shape. Whether your lips are plump, wide or thin, they speak volumes about your personality and the way you portray yourself.

We asked Miami-based makeup artist Marissa Nemes to read our lips, and she gave us a perfect analysis of not only our own lips, but every lip shape we could think of. Check it out -- it's free, it doesn't require your palms or a crystal ball, and it might be the best (and only) lip reading you'll ever get.
http://images.totalbeauty.com/uploads/editorial/lip-shape-personality/lip-shape-personality-angelina-jolie.jpg

Full lips

Women with curvy, voluptuous lips like Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson are "courageous and self-assured," Nemes says. There's nothing more gorgeous than having perfectly symmetrical lips, and they make you look exceptional and irresistible.

Makeup tip: "In order to keep these lips soft and sultry and not take any attention away from the rest of your face, stick with a simple lip moisturizer," Nemes says. We like Kiehl's Lip Balm, $7. Having naturally full lips means you don't need a ton of lip liner (or at all, really). Just apply a bit of color without overdoing it.

TIPS TO REMOVE STRETCH MARKS

TIPS TO REMOVE STRETCH MARKS

Caused by varying conditions of sudden gain or loss of weight, hormonal changes, puberty, pregnancy and attempt at muscle building; stretch marks as suggested by its name involve stretching, pulling and tearing of the skin’s middle layer or ‘dermis’. On account of the above mentioned factors different kinds and textures of marks appear on skin. Absence of ‘collagen’ fiber also aids the formation of stretch marks. Generally affecting areas with susceptibility to store excess fat, stretch marks which initially manifest in reddish or purple hues, gradually fade out with time. Thus such marks tend to affect regions around abdomen, breasts, thighs, and upper arms.

Basically posing no hazards to health and its overall vigor; stretch marks are self repairing in themselves gradually withering with time. However, from the point of view of physical beauty and grooming they may turn out to be embarrassingly disgraceful. So in order to prevent social embarrassment one has wide ranging options of home remedies to choose from.

Natural Treatment for Stretch Marks

  • Mostly occurring during pregnancy and puberty, one must be proactive about treating them as soon as they occur.
Almond oil is quite effective in treating stretch marks. Apart from its high Vitamin E content, Almond oil serves to moisturize the affected areas. Moreover it can be a safe option to be exercised during pregnancy. Vitamin E adds to the development of elastin and collagen content of the skin; thereby serving to ease the stretch marks.
Regular massaging of the affected areas with other herbal alternatives such as oil extracts from wheat germ and that of olive are helpful in easing stretch marks caused by pregnancy or during lactation.
Lavender oil and cocoa butter are also effective for a speedy easing out of stretch marks. Fat extracted from beans of cacao beans helps to moisturize the skin. By way of moisturizing it helps to reduce stretch marks.
Amalgam made out of lavender and chamomile oil with seven drops of each being mixed with one another is similarly effective.
Folic acid recommended by most gynecologists during pregnancy and lactation also contributes significantly towards healing stretch marks.
Regular moisturizing of areas prone to the development of stretch marks will be a good option to keep stretch marks at bay.
Keeping your system well hydrated with plenty of water also aids in battling stretch marks. Minimum eight to ten glasses of water will keep your skin naturally moisturized.
Gentle scrubbing of the parts affected with apricot scrub also helps in healing stretch marks.
Natural scrub made with the help of oats also serves to reduce stretch marks.
Application of anti stretch masks produced from naturally available herbal extracts also serve to reduce stress.
Herb encapsulating the essential goodness of nature-the one and only ‘aloe vera’ also plays its vital bit in getting rid of stretch marks. The amalgam of aloe and olive oil works wonders in reducing the skin of stretch marks. Aloe with its salicylic acid helps in the removal of stretch marks.
An herbal concoction produced by blending aloe and jojoba can also be applied on areas wrought by stretch marks to achieve the desired results.
Food rich in zinc, Vitamin C and protein serve to repair stretch marks. Thus citrus fruits, nuts, fish, milk, large helpings of green salad should be consumed abundantly to help ease stretch marks.
Physical exercises focusing on crunches of abdomen also serve to tone muscle thereby contributing indirectly to reducing stretch marks because excess gain or loss of weight contributes to the formation of stretch marks.
Even yoga with its focus on exercise and relaxation helps to ease stretch marks.
It is advisable that women in their pregnancy do not opt for chemically prepared solutions and creams so as to remove the ugly formation of stretch marks. Even for others the chemical contents of the marketed formula may react with skin to produce damaging rashes.
Stretch marks can appear to be itchy at times, but enough care should be taken not to scratch the parts affected.
In order to get over itchiness, you can go for a warm shower followed by gentle oil massage.
Besides using oil and herbal remedies, supplements in Vitamin E and K can also be equally helpful in reducing stretch marks. But they should be taken only after consultation with physician.
Care should be taken that there is neither substantial gain nor loss of weight.
As a last resort to curing the ugly linear formation on skin; plastic surgery may be thought of. But considering the expense and certain risks involved in the procedure, it is always better to fall back upon natural home remedies because they are relatively cost effective and free from side effects.

PREVENT BREAST CANCER NATURALLY 10 STEPS

10 STEPS TO PREVENT BREAST CANCER

1. Maintain a healthy body weight (BMI less than 25) throughout your life. Weight gain in midlife, independent of BMI, has been shown to significantly increase breast cancer risk. Additionally, and elevated BMI has been conclusively shown to increase the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer.
2. Minimize or avoid alcohol. Alcohol use is the most well established dietary risk factor for breast cancer. The Harvard Nurses' Health study, along with several others, has shown consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a day can increase breast cancer risk by as much as 20-25 percent.

3. Consume as many fruits and vegetables as possible. Eat seven or more servings daily. The superstars for breast cancer protection include all cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower) ; dark leafy greens (collards, kale, spinach) ; carrots and tomatoes. The superstar fruits include citrus, berries and cherries. Note: it is best to eat cruciferous vegetables raw or lightly cooked, as some of the phytochemicals believed to offer protection against breast cancer are destroyed by heat.

4. Exercise regularly the rest of your life. Many studies have shown that regular exercise provides powerful protection against breast cancer. Aim for 30 minutes or more of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) five or more days a week. Consistency and duration, not intensity, are key!

5. Do your fats right! The type of fat in your diet can affect your breast cancer risk. Minimize consumption of omega-6 fats (sunflower, safflower, corn and cottonseed oils), saturated fats and trans fats. Maximize your intake of omega-3 fats, especially from oily fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, lake trout and herring). Consume monounsaturated oils (canola, olive oil, nuts/seeds, avocados) as your primary fat source, as these foods have potential anticancer properties. Specifically, canola oil is a good source of omega-3 fats; extra virgin olive oil is a potent source of antioxidant polyphenols, including squalene; and nuts and seeds provide you with the cancer protective mineral, selenium.

6. Do your carbs right! Minimize consumption of the high glycemic index, "Great White Hazards" - white flour, white rice, white potatoes, sugar and products containing them. These foods trigger hormonal changes that promote cellular growth in breast tissue. Replace these "wrong" carbs with whole grains and beans/legumes. Beans/legumes because of their high fiber and lignan content are especially special.

7. Consume whole food soy products regularly, such as tofu, tempeh, edamame, roasted soy nuts, soy milk and miso. Only consume organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) soy. Epidemiologic studies have shown a positive association between soy consumption and reduced breast cancer risk.
8. Minimize exposure to pharmacologic estrogens and xeno-estrogens. Do not take prescription estrogens unless medically indicated. Lifetime exposure to estrogen plays a fundamental role in the development of breast cancer. Also avoid estrogen-like compounds found in environmental pollutants, such as pesticides and industrial chemicals. Buy organic produce if you can afford it; otherwise, thoroughly wash all non-organic produce. Minimize exposure to residual hormones found in non-organic dairy products, meat and poultry.

9. Take your supplements daily. A multivitamin, 500-1,000 mg of vitamin C in divided doses, 200-400 IUs of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols, and pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Also take 200 mcg of the mineral selenium or eat one to two Brazil nuts as an alternative. If you have a chronic medical condition or take prescription drugs, consult your physician first.

10. Maintain a positive mental outlook. Engage in self-nurturing behaviors regularly. Develop rich, warm and mutually beneficial relationships with family and friends. Get adequate sleep (7-8 hours per night). The mind-body associations with breast cancer are significant.

Dad Joins Lara Croft

Jolie briefly reconciles with her father, and the two star in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. They forge a stronger bond during filming, and Voight shows fatherly concern when Jolie performs 80 percent of her own stunts. "I'd be on the sidelines with the stunt coordinator saying, 'You're pushing her too hard,' or pulling her aside and telling her she was taking too many risks," he tells the New Zealand Herald. "But she wouldn't listen. She's too independent, too headstrong."

ASHTON KUTCHER

ASTON KUTCHER

Actor Ashton Kutcher was born Feb. 7, 1978, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A talent scout discovered him in college, which led to modeling, most notably for Calvin Klein. In 1998, Kutcher landed the role of Kelso on That '70s Show. He later produced MTV's hit reality television show Punk'd. In 2004, he starred in The Butterfly Effect, also serving as an executive producer on the film. Kutcher went on to star in films like Guess Who,

Big Break: 'That '70s Show'

In the spring of 1998, Ashton Kutcher landed his breakthrough role on the popular retro sitcom That '70s Show. The comedy followed the life of Eric Foreman (Topher Grace) and his teenage friends as they grew up in the small town of Point Place, Wisconsin. Appearing as the adorable but dense Michael Kelso, Kutcher won over fans his broad humor and good looks. Mila Kunis played his on-again, off-again on-screen girlfriend, Jackie, and Danny Masterson, Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama rounded out the rest of the cast as Steve Hyde, Donna Pinciotti and Fez, respectively.
The young actors on the show developed a strong bond, and were often seen out together in Los Angeles.

In addition to his work on the series, Kutcher began landing film roles. His early film credits include the private school comedy Coming Soon (1999), the romantic comedy Down to You (2000) with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles,

and the crime drama Reindeer Games (2000) with Ben Affleck. For his first leading role, Kutcher didn't stary far from his television image. He played a wacky stoner, Jesse Montgomery III, who, along with friend Chester Greenburg (Seann William Scott), tries to retrace the previous night's events in Dude, Where's My Car? (2000). While it was derided by critics, the comedy was a box-office success, and Kutcher, subsequently, developed a large fan base. That same year, the actor was named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People."

Kutcher's follow-up film, Texas Rangers (2001), however, failed to make much of an impression on audiences or critics. Bouncing back soon after, he appeared in two romantic comedies: My Boss's Daughter and Just Married (both released in 2003). After filming Just Married, Kutcher became involved with his co-star, the late Brittany Murphy, but the relationship lasted only a few months. Shortly thereafter, he began dating actress Demi Moore; the couple's 15-year age difference caused quite a stir.

Producing Television and Movies

Also in 2003, Ashton Kutcher launched his career as a producer. He served as a co-producer on the film My Boss's Daughter, and helped create the MTV cable network's hit reality television show Punk'd. Preying on unsuspecting stars, Punk'd played practical jokes on the likes of Justin Timberlake, Hilary Duff and Tyra Banks during its eight seasons on the air.

Two years later, Kutcher headed another reality TV show, Beauty and the Geek, which brought together smart, socially challenged men and beautiful, less intelligent women, who worked together toward the show's grand prize.

Tackling more dramatic fare, in 2004, Kutcher starred in The Butterfly Effect, also serving as an executive producer on the science-fiction film. The movie, which revolved around a young man who can travel back into his own past to change the course of events, did well at the box office, bringing in around $60 million.

In 2005, Kutcher said goodbye to That '70s Show to pursue other opportunities. Returning to the romantic-comedy genre that same year, the actor starred in Guess Who (2005) with Zoe Saldana and comedian Bernie Mac, and then in A Lot Like Love (2005) with Amanda Peet.

On September 24, 2005, Kutcher wed Demi Moore in a small ceremony at their Beverly Hills home. Moore's three daughters from her previous marriage to actor Bruce Willis served as her bridesmaids and walked her down the aisle. While Kutcher was dating Moore, he became very close with her children, so much so that they refer to him as "MOD," or "My Other Dad." Even more remarkable, Kutcher has developed a friendship with Moore's ex-husband, Willis, who was on hand for the nuptials.

Recent Work

Trying his hand at action, Kutcher appeared in The Guardian (2006) with Kevin Costner, a film about the U.S. Coast Guard. Kuther played a rescue swimmer in the film; to prepare for the part, Kutcher underwent intensive physical training. "I used to be a pack-and-a-half-a-day smoker, so I had no endurance," he later told Cosmopolitan magazine. Also in 2006,
